It is a fundamental requirement for a countries to become a nation – social security are the protection and benefits that provided by government to make sure that the people have a fundamental cares. Thailand’s social security, though not as advance as Scandinavian countries, is quite efficient so far. In 2017, government made an announcement of additional benefits in healthcare for everyone, with the budget of 1.5 billion baht.
Social security = everyone benefits in Thailand
If you’re a citizen of Thailand, you work or live here, you will get a social security benefits – expat (with work permits) included. Whether it is necessary for your life or not, it’s something that you should at least be aware of. 2017 Social security updates.
On 22nd December 2016, social security office announced that from 1 January 2017 forward, everyone will have a free medical examination (within the policies requirement) as the people picks, approximately around 1.5-1.8 billion baht.

In 2017, there’ll be also 900 baht dental coverage per year for everyone with the social security, no pre-paid requiring. Currently there are 535 private hospitals which are covering that medical care and every governmental hospital across Thailand that supports this regulation.
Every medical examination goes from 1/years (18 years old plus), make sure to see through the requirement and terms before making any assumption.
How complicated is it, to have a social security.
As a freelance or an expat, it might be somehow annoying and difficult. The truth is that requires some procedures and papers to acquire legitimate social security benefits. You could either go through the processes yourself, or ask your employer to do it for you. As long as you have a work permits, it doesn’t concern your line of works, labor included, have the same benefits as Thai workers.
Normally for Thai, we use id numbers to use the social security, but expat will have a special identification card for social security, which is a requirement to gain its benefit.
There are companies that doesn’t provide, but you could apply for yourself.
Social security is the requirement in business model, every employers have to make sure that their employees have a names in social security office data base. There might be some small companies or an unorganized business model that doesn’t provide their staffs with these things, though not necessary, but you could applied it for yourself, with no cost.
